High Voltage Motor Control and PFC Developers Kit

The High Voltage Motor Control and PFC Developer’s Kit provides a great reference platform to learn and experiment with digital control of high voltage motors with Texas Instruments’ C2000™ 32-bit microcontroller family.

The board includes an AC rectifier stage, a two-phase interleaved power factor correction (PFC) stage, a 3-phase motor inverter stage, isolated CAN and SCI connectivity, PWM DAC’s for oscilloscope monitoring of system variables, and a controlCARD DIMM100 slot with included controlCARDs based on the C2000 Piccolo TMS320F28035 MCU and the C2000 Delfino TMS320F28335 MCU. Motors are sold separately.

The 3-phase inverter stage is capable of sensorless and sensored field oriented control of high voltage ACI and PMSM motors, or trapezoidal and sinusoidal control of high voltage BLDC motors.

Piccolo Based Solar Explorer Kit

The Piccolo F28035 based solar explorer kit is intended to give designers the opportunity to evaluate different power stages used in solar applications in a safe, low voltage environment. This kit also offers designers of single panel off-grid applications such as lighting or motor control systems a robust development platform to start from by utilizing the 36VDC intermediate bus.

All of the primary application power stages are controlled with a single C2000 MCU, including a single switch boost stage for maximum power point tracking, a SEPIC battery charging stage, and a grid-tie-capable DC/AC inverter stage capable of outputting 24VAC. Integrated USB JTAG emulation eliminates the need for external JTAG development hardware. A built in panel emulation circuit also allows designers to evaluate different shading situations without the need for expensive external hardware. A quickstart graphical user interface is included, as well as fully documented, open source hardware and software libraries.

Power conditioning (also known as Active Power Filtering) can be implemented on this kit with proper configuration and minimal software modifications.

This development kit implements a complete grid-tied solar micro inverter based around TI’sC2000 Piccolo™ TMS320F28035 microcontroller (MCU). The Solar Micro Inverter Development Kit introduces designers to a fully-suitable MCU for solar micro inverter applications, and guides users seamlessly through the design process and application challenges.

Users can evaluate the design initially through a simple graphical interface without the need to dive into code development. When ready to explore in further depth, detailed theory-based documentation guides users step-by-step through the software and hardware implementation by incrementally building from open loop to closed loop operation of the solar micro inverter.

Bridgeless Power Factor Correction Converter

This design is a digitally controlled, bridgeless, 300W, power factor correction (PFC) converter. The distinguishing characteristic of a bridgeless PFC converter is that it eliminates the need for a diode bridge at the input. This reduces power losses that normally occur in a diode bridge and, as a result, improves overall system efficiency.

For this design, a C2000™ Piccolo™ TMS320F28035 microcontroller (MCU) is the digital controller for the PFC converter, controlling the two boost power stages that comprise the bridgeless PFC converter. By operating the stages alternatively during the positive and negative half cycles of the AC mains voltage, the Piccolo MCU implements both the AC-to-DC rectification as well as power factor control. This design achieves full load efficiency greater than 93% and power factor of greater than 0.98 at 50% or greater load.
